Exotic Pets Do's and Don'ts

When it comes to exotic pets, it's a good idea to know what you're doing. This is true for any pet, of course, but exotic pets often require particular care that is not common knowledge. For example, just about everyone knows that you need to walk a dog every day; but not everyone knows you need to give your pet parrot fresh fruits and vegetables every day.

Another reason to be informed is that there is, unfortunately, a thriving, illegal exotic pet trade. You will need to be sure that the pet you want to get is from a reputable breeder or rescue organization.

Here is a list of some basic do's and don'ts regarding exotic pets.

Do's:

* Consider adopting your exotic pet. There are various rescue groups that work in exotic animals, and you might find a real gem.

* Do your research. Knowledge is key to a successful owner-pet relationship, and exotic pets have special needs. If you know about these things ahead of time, then you can have a much happier and healthier relationship with your pet. Check the price of food, bedding, housing, and so forth to get an idea of the overall, ongoing cost of the animal.

* Find a reputable exotic pet veterinarian. Your dog-and-cat vet isn't going to cut it when you have a sick chinchilla or an ailing python or an ill parrot!

* Make sure you have the time and money for an exotic pet. It's not all about showing off the unusual and unique pet you have; it's a time and money investment.

* Love your pet for who it is, not what you think it should be. For example, if you get a parrot because you want a bird that talks, and then the parrot doesn't talk, then find something else unique about the bird that you love.

* Know the laws in your area. You don't want to get "busted" for owning an illegal pet.

Don'ts

* Don't buy an exotic pet from a "shady" operation. Even reputable pet stores may have stock that's been captured from the wild or from animal "mills." And some people sell illegal exotic pets.

* Don't buy an exotic pet from any facility - pet store, breeder, or rescue group - without a tour of the facility. Go unannounced and check everything out; see if it's clean and well-kept.

* Don't be impulsive in your purchase.

* Don't neglect that first vet visit after you acquire your pet. It's important to get your pet thoroughly checked out. Don't forget annual check-ups either.
