How to Feed Birds in the Winter

 Birds tend to run out of food in the winter. Many people stop filling their bird feeders during the summer. And the snow and cold weather mean natural food sources are diminished. You can add cheer to your yard or porch by feeding birds in the winter. Here are a few ideas to help you get started.

#1 Choose the Right Feeders

Winter feeders need to have a few special considerations. Ideally a wintertime bird feeder will not be made of metal. Metal gets cold and slippery, making it difficult and even dangerous for the birds. A covered bird feeder works best because it helps keep snow and ice off of the perch. 

#2 A Variety

If you want to attract a variety of birds to your yard, consider adding a few different types of feeders. For example, some feeders are meant to hang from trees and posts, while others sit on the ground. Add a few different types of feeders to your yard and enjoy the back yard show. 

However, remember to take precautions to protect your feeder and the birds from predators. Some feeders have natural protections built in. You may also want to hide your feeders in natural cover. And you can provide corn cobs and other treats for squirrels and animals that may wish to steal from the bird feeder. 

#3 Seeds and Nuts

If you�re providing a few different types of bird feeders, make sure to also provide different types of food. Common winter bird food includes:

* Sunflower seeds

* Hulled peanuts

* Suet mixes with seeds or fruit

* Peanut butter and peanut butter mixed with seeds

* White millet seed

You can find bird seed at your local pet store. You can also make your own and buy the materials in bulk.

#4 Get the Family Involved

Keeping bird feeders clean and stocked is a time-consuming job. Consider involving your family members. Ask them to each take responsibility for keeping a feeder clean and stocked with seed. If you have young children you might consider asking them to make bird feeders out of pine cones, peanut butter, and seeds. It�s a fun project and a great way to get children involved.

#5 Water Source

Consider also providing a water source during the winter. There are a few possibilities.  You can purchase a heated bird bath for your yard. You can also create your own water source. Cut an empty milk gallon in half and fill it with water. Hang it from a tree or set it on the ground. Keep it full of fresh water. When the water freezes, simply thaw and refill or toss the container and replace it with a fresh one.
