If you have a website, you're probably placing banner ads on it. If you're not, you should be.
I've heard lots of arguments that contend banner ads are worthless, or near worthless. But the fact is that banner ads can be very productive and bring in significant revenues. It's just a matter of their design and most important, their placement on the web page. You can't just scatter banner ads all over your page and expect them to yield any significant results.
Banner Placement is Crucial
Basically there are four spots on your web page which will bring you the greatest nmber of click throughs if you put your banners there.
The first, and most important spot on your web page is the upper left corner. If you can get a banner into that spot, the bigger the better, do it
A 336X280 banner, or a 300X250 banner is good, but if you can make it bigger, don't hesitate. This is the money corner of your page. You should not hesitate to get a banner into that spot if you have any way of doing it.
So if you can't get a banner into the upper left corner of your web page, or if you want to supplement it, or if you've got a secondary product to advertise, then go for for the "leaderboard." That is a 728X90 banner along the top of your page, to the right of your logo.
The third most preferential spot for a banner is the top right of your sidebar. Again, bigger is better. 336X280 or 300X250 is good.
And then finally, you can put another banner immediately below that, 160X600 pixels is the best size for this.
Of course it isn't necessary to use all of these spots on one page. I'm just suggesting their order of importance and urging you to use as many of these spots as you reasonably can.
Opt In Forms Take Precedence
If you have an opt in form on your page, it goes into the top right of your sidebar, above any other banners or any other materials. That's important. If you want to collect those infinitely valuable email addresses, that's where you need to put it.
A Word About Banner Sizes
It's often confusing, looking at the banner sizes and trying to picture actually how big they are and how they're going to look.
The numbers shown on the size description refer to the pixels required for the banner. That is, how much space the banner will take.
If you figure 80 pixels per inch, you'll be in the ballpark. So that means that our336X280 banner will be about 4 X 3.5 inches.
The first number shown is always the width. The second number is the height.
Now go ahead and get some banners on your pages, or change them around to fit in with what I've just told you and watch your revenues grow.
Good luck,
Werner
