Building self-confidence is a top priority if you are an adult who is currently battling the effects of childhood abuse. It not only retarded your progress as a child, but continues to do so today. If the suffering continues, you will always achieve sub-par performance and your life will never really improve. Its like being a hunchback who endlessly carries deadweight up a steep mountain in a heavy rainstorm. This post contains some starter ideas to build your self-confidence and empower that wounded inner-child who never had a chance to reach its full potential to develop as an adult.

1. Seek Professional Help
Many self-help gurus suggest that it is important to take several steps to improve self-esteem. However, very few of them seem to advise consulting a psychotherapist. In fact, they often give the impression that professional help is unnecessary and a waste of time. Seeking counseling from a mental health professional can, in fact, be helpful, and should at least be considered. Just be sure to do extensive research to find a professional with a great stellar references and a superb track record.

2. Read Confidence Boosting Books
The most recommended books for boosting self-esteem are The Power of Positive Thinking by Norman Vincent Peale, The Magic of Believing by Claude M. Bristol, TNT, The Power Within You by Claude M. Bristol, and Pyschocybernetics by Dr. Maxwell Maltz. Jot down the ideas that appeal to you, and then apply them daily. Make it a personal mission to scour lots of books on self-esteem boosters. Read until the information begins to make sense mentally rather than just intellectually.

3. Listen to CDs on Building Confidence
There are many CD programs that focus primarily on building self-esteem. Listen to them during those moments when you are relaxed, and are not busy tending to other matters. You dont want any distractions when listening to CDs. Therefore, create a listening environment with the least amount of interruption. Also, CDs are great for driving in rush-hour bumper-to-bumper traffic. CD learning is an excellent way to start building confidence.

4. Keep a Self-Respect Journal

A self-respect journal is a book with blank pages that you will fill up daily with lessons and steps to help build your confidence. Your aim is to keep track of your progress. The journal should contain ideas from helpful sources such as books, magazine articles, and CD programs. It should also contain your own private thoughts, experiences, and solutions. Also, your journal should be for your eyes only. You dont want to share the information in your journal with anyone else at the risk of being ridiculed and causing sabotage to your confidence building efforts.

5. Amass and Study Exhaustive Reports on Confidence
The Internet provides great scientific data on building confidence. Spend some time researching and reading this data. Doing so will help you understand how your low self-image issues are effecting your mind and body functions. This will help you become better equipped at battling these issues.

6. Practice Creative Visualization

Creative visualization is a mind-mapping process that involves mentally focusing purely on desired physical outcomes. An example of how it works is if you wanted a brand new laptop computer, you would simply visualize being in possession of it. The idea is that if you see it in your minds eye, you will eventually own it. While visualizing it, physical effort would be needed in acquiring it. This would include gathering up the funds, visiting electronic stores and checking out a few computers. Creative visualization is a great exercise for building confidence.

7. Stand Up for Yourself

Speak up for yourself from time-to-time. This might be hard to do if youve been accustomed to avoiding troublesome attention. However, you must stand up and defend yourself if you want to build your confidence. Dont worry about repercussions or possible consequences. Just persuasively state your claim and defend yourself.

8. Follow Great People

Most if not all of us have at least one person who we respect, admire and perhaps observe very closely. Who would be the people that, if given the choice, you would most like to copy? If you can answer that question, then your next step is to follow them. Be their shadow and do everything that they do.

9. Set Medium-Range Goals

Medium-range goals are those that exist halfway between two extremes. The reason that mid-range goals are the best is because they require a considerable amount of effort, but take much less time to reach than long-range goals. Also, they are gateway goals that ultimately make it easier to reach long-range goals. So, set these goals first, then use them to accomplish your longer goals.

10. Reward Yourself
Reward yourself every now and then for a job well-done. When you finish reading a book or completing a long project, give yourself a treat. Splurge on a festive meal, go see a good movie, or take a weekend trip somewhere. With each small achievement, reward yourself/
