Parenting is wonderful experience. However, it can be a mixture of happiness and stress. Unfortunately, at some point every parent will go through a period where their children simply are not behaving as they should. The behavioral problems can range from something as simple as not sharing their toys to something as major as constant lying and acting out in school. As a parent it is important that youre proactive in getting your child to adhere to rules and exhibit good behavior. Though no child is perfect all the time, if you notice that your child is constantly
causing problems, it may be time to try a different approach.
Communication
There are some parents that simply disagree with talking to their children. Some feel that as an adult, they should not have to communicate with their child but that their child should simply follow instructions. Communication is very important between a child and a parent. There are lots of reasons why your child could be acting out and if you dont talk about it, you can never really solve the problem. Children act out because they need attention, their having trouble in school, or because theyre unsure of how to express what is really wrong. Ask your child what is going on and express your concern for how theyve been acting lately. You might find out something beneficial and can help them get passed it.
Never Label
No matter how horrible your childs behavior has become, it is important that you dont begin labeling them as a problem child. Your child will begin to feel that you are not happy with them as people and may continue to act out. It is important that you discuss their behavior, but it is the behavior that is a problem, not the child.
Set Expectations
You cant let your child just squeeze by. It is important that you set expectations and that those expectations are high. For instance, if your child is younger and you allow them to throw a tantrum because they cant get what they want and then make excuses for their behavior, this will only carry on throughout the years. While a two year old tantrum might be expected, no one wants to deal with a 13 year old having a tantrum. Make sure your child knows what you expect of them at all times. However, also keep in mind that theyre not perfect.
Follow Through
One of the most important things you can do for your child as a parent is make sure that you always follow through when dealing with consequences for their actions. If you are not consistent in what you say and hold them accountable, your discipline methods become null and void. By following through with consequences for
negative behavior and rewards for positive behavior, your child will know what they can and cannot get away with.
No one ever said that parenting would be easy, but these few tips will help you in getting your childs behavior under control. If you find that your child is still acting out, it might be helpful to allow them to see a mental health professional. Sometimes there are underlying reasons why they act this way and a professional could help determine what that is and provide tools on how they can better express themselves constructively.
