There are many hobbies that people can get into with their free time. Yet, one of the more practical hobbies you can start doing that is fun to learn, is fishing. If you have been wanting to learn how to fish, but haven't had the time to then look no further. This article has plenty of information on fishing for dummies to help you get started.

Crappie

Since having just the right bait is crucial to catching more fish, here is an easy way to tell if you are seeing black or white crappie. White crappie have six spines in their dorsal fin while black crappie have seven or eight. White crappie also tend to have bands across their body while black crappie have a more speckled pattern.

Anyone graduating from earthworms should consider a spinnerbait. This type of lure is ideal for fishermen who regularly fish in shallow, cloudy water or shaded areas. Spinnerbait are attractive to bass especially, but crappie can be caught with spinnerbait too.

Saltwater

Saltwater fish tend to be a lot sharper when it comes to the scent of your bait. For that reason, it is usually advisable to fish with fresh live or fresh dead bait, when fishing in salt water. This is more likely to attract fish from a distance than artificial lures with more subtle or less natural scents.

Select your rod and reel carefully, based on the type of water you will be fishing in. Freshwater rods and reels are usually smaller, while saltwater fishing requires a more heavy-duty rod and reel. If you don't make the right selection when it comes to your gear, you might find that it can't handle the fish you are trying to catch.

Bass

Grubs are good in helping you catch bass. These little guys can help you reel in some very large fish. Most people use them for luring in smallmouth bass, but they're also good for luring in largemouth bass. They are an excellent choice for bait when fishing in areas that do not have large amounts of coverage like reservoirs.

Lighter colored grubs are a standard choice of bait for most bass fishermen. Grubs that are white, yellow, chartreuse, smoke, and salt and pepper tend to be very effective. Translucent grubs tend to feature metallic flecks that work to reflect light and boost your chances of success. If nothing seems to be biting, choose a grub which is the same color as the water.

Rig

Look for a rod and reel set that most closely matches the specific kind of fishing you will be doing. If you're interested in catching walleye, you'll want to use a spinner rig, but if you're catching something else, you'll want to find the equipment that's best for them.

Never lose your fillet knife again by tying a bobber to it. It will happen one time or another. The longer you fish, the higher the chance this knife will be dropped in the water. The idea here is to tie some type of small, lightweight floating device to your knife. Pass a piece of string, twine or rawhide through the knife's handle. Anchor this handle to a cork, a bobber, or something that's light and floats.

Reel

There is nothing more important to fishing than having a sharp fishing hook. A well sharpened fishing hook makes sure that anything you catch will remain hooked on as you reel it in. Check to see that you have sharp hooks before every fishing trip, and replace those that have become dull and worn.

A good fishing tip is to use a line weight that is as light as possible, but will still allow you to safely reel in your fish. If the line is visible and heavy, that means that it is a thick line. You want the right weighted line for the kind of fish you are trying to catch.

Products

If you are just starting out with crappie fishing reels don't overload your tackle box. You can find millions of different types of bait and pieces of equipment in the fishing supply store. Though they all serve a purpose, you don't necessarily need every piece. Start with a handful of different types of bait and a few different sized hooks and weights. You can always add more later once you have fine tuned your list of necessary products.

You should now have a greater insight when it comes to the world of fishing. Fishing is a hobby that isn't that hard to grasp and it is something people of all ages can enjoy. So go ahead and use the knowledge that you have gained today and get started with your fishing adventures.
