Do you watch advertisements on TV? During the Superbowl everyone seems to be as interested in the commercials as in the game itself. Whether it is an Apple launch, Mustangs playing football, or the Doritos Dog people probably will remember the ads longer than what happened in the second quarter of the game.
A few years ago An Army of One ad came out for the US Army. Over the years they
have had many different campaigns: Get an Edge on Life,
be all you can be...the winner is "be all you can be." Why?
First, I think that that everyone knows that in the real world there is no such thing as an "Army of One." Though a great series of films Rambo gave the impression that you could do it all by yourself. But wait, he didn't. In most of the movies he had the help of others...he was part of a team.
An Army of One ignores that when you are part of a team you have support both physically, mentally, and socially. You really can be all you can be when you are part of a team. It isn't just true in combat but in entertainment, sports, and business.
The comedy team of Martin and Lewis was great. As Denzel Washington stated in Remember the Titans, "Dean Martin sang the songs and got the girls" but Dean Martin would have never been more than a club singer had he not teamed up with Jerry Lewis. When they eventually broke up neither was as successful as they had been together.
Troy Aikman is one of the most successful quarterbacks in NFL history, yet he knew that is success was due in large part to his offensive line to whom he often gave credit and steak dinners in appreciation, not to mention the magic between Aikman and Michael Ervin.
Even in sports that we think of as individual such as wrestling there is a definite team attitude. Dan Gable was an amazing wrestler. In 1972 he won an Olympic Gold Medal without a single point being scored against him. But, as amazing as that is his coaching career was even more off the charts: 20 big ten championships, and 17 NCAA championships.
Likewise, business should not be done with An Army of One attitude. Most successful entrepreneurs give credit to a mentor, to strategic alliances, and to tools and systems that made them effective. Bill Gates was not really a software genius, he was a master of developing relationships with those who would take Microsoft to the top of world in profits and influence.
What is your business, your mission, your goal? Whatever it is, I encourage you to be all that you can be by building an A-team, by setting up relations with strategic partners, by finding a mentor, and by find the systems and tools to be successful. So you do not have to be...
