Perhaps you have heard of the "
80/20 Rule." While it does not apply to
everything, many systems do follow the 80/20 rule.
What is the 80/20
rule? In a vegetable garden, it has been observed that 80% of peas are
produced by only 20% of pea pods. In many businesses, 80% of the
profits are produced by only 20% of the employees; 80% of customer
service problems are created by only 20% of the customers; 80% of
decisions are made during 20% of meeting time; and 20% of our efforts
produce 80% of our production.
The 80/20 rule as applied to networks is
that 20% or less of the nodes in a network account for
80% of the connections.
Often the ratio is even more extreme. On the Web over 80% of the links
go to less than 15% of the Web pages. In the U.S. currently, it is said
that 5% of the people hold more than 95% of the wealth. This ratio is
even more extreme in some other countries.
With that said, its a numbers game. Most people you sign up will not work your program, work with the workers. Work with the people that really want to be in the top 5%.
