Historical Innovations in Information Systems
by Scott Mcallister

Computer technology has become ubiquitous in modern society as evidenced by the widespread use of handheld devices such as smart phones and tablet computers. While consumer based products are the most widely understood forms of information systems being used today, there are vast networks of computer hardware and software that are being used by the business community to make more informed decisions about operational efficiency and financial improvement. All of these types of technology can be considered information systems because they allow consumers and business professionals to make better choices about how to accomplish personal and professional objectives.

Few people realize that the origins of modern day information systems can be traced all the way back to French textile mills that began operating in the early 1700s. Individuals who ran these mills used rigid pieces of paper with a series of holes punched in them to operate machinery and store business related data. This type of information system was referred to as a punch card. Remnants of the old punch card systems could be seen as recent as 2012. One of the most well-known remnants has been used in the electoral process in the United States. Until recently, voter stations would instruct voters to punch holes in cards that contained a list of all the different candidates competing for specific government offices. The holes in these cards were then tallied to determine which candidate would be declared the winner.

As technology evolved, punch cards were gradually replaced with magnetized storage mediums known as databases. A type of database that most people are familiar with is the hard drive that is contained within every computer in operation today. A database uses a series of rows and columns that are used to store information in a uniform manner. Bits of information that are stored in a database are usually related and can only be retrieved using read/write heads that are also contained within the computer. Modern day databases are commonly referred to as non-volatile memory because they are far more durable than the old punch card systems, and they can be used in a far more versatile manner.

The evolution of computer technology over the past 350 years is the result of many different innovative minds who sought to improve the way everyday tasks were accomplished. Without the collaborative efforts of people who understand the technical aspects of information systems and people who wish to use information systems to solve real problems, the technology industry would not be as advanced as it is today. As technology has become more advanced, the business community has developed an appreciation for individuals who have a basic understanding of computer science, but who are also able to work collaboratively with administrators to use technology to help solve complex business problems.

Until recently, there was no degree program that was designed for graduates who specialize in applying the technical aspects of computer science to complex business problems. As a result of increased demand for such a program, educational institutions have developed the MIS Degree. This course of study combines basic computer science courses with the business administration curriculum. Individuals who would like to understand some of the technical details behind information systems, but who prefer to work in a collaborative administrative environment will find that this degree track prepares them for the type of career they are looking for. The business community is hiring MIS graduates at a rapid pace to help improve business operations in an increasingly competitive world and individuals can expect to receive generous compensation for the knowledge and skills they possess.
