One topic we don't devote enough time to is Leads or, more specifically, your reaction to those who respond to your marketing.

I
was reminded to write about this when I received a response to my Big
Ticket Facebook campaign (this is an automated lead service I pay $12
weekly for and is bringing me a ton of leads) that began like
this:
"You can
take your phony business and shove it up your ......"
When
you market any program you will get leads, good ones and not so
good.
NEVER NEVER NEVER TAKE RESPONSES
PERSONALLY.
Here is the truth about
what will happen when you market:
1.
You will get
good leads who will enroll and bring you great money!
2.
You will get
people who give phony email addresses, phony names, phony
everything.
3. You will get
people who will suggest you perform impossible physical acts on
yourself, who will creatively
insult you and who otherwise are a waste of time.
4.
You will get
responses from broke people.
5.
You will get
responses from those who can easily afford what you are
offering.
Over the years I have primarily
used postcards and magazine ads targeted to my audience. Most
responses to these are productive.
With
the introduction of our Big Ticket program I am venturing into online
marketing - because I know it is an important part of overall
marketing - and getting a higher volume of responses and, thus, a
higher volume of, well, creative responses.
I
get emails from my members showing me ugly responses they sometimes
get and telling me, "This is what I
get when I market." But I know they
get good ones, too, so it's important to remind them all businesses
have positive and negative aspects.
Successful
people ignore the ugly ones and build on the positive ones.
Although
I have to confess I consider the ugly ones 'entertainment' and
often send them a reply like this:
"Yours
is the third email I received like this and the other two were flat
broke. So I'm guessing you are flat broke, too. Sorry you are a loser
but thanks for not wasting my time. Best wishes."
Two
weeks ago I actually got a reply after sending this and the reply
went like this:
"I
can't believe you wrote back. Sorry for the insult but I have come
across so many scams. Maybe you are different. Send me your website
and I'll take another look."
He
has now subscrembed to my newsletter and who knows what the future
holds.
Leads are our lifeline but they are
not a perfect entity; enjoy the good ones and have fun with the, uh,
losers.
