The Military is not a social experiment

In all the talk about Donald Trump, Jeb Bush, and Carly Fiorina, there remained little room for former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee. But if Huckabee was lost in the post-debate shuffle, at least one thing that he said on stage should be remembered. When asked how he would handle the Defense Department initiative to welcome transgenders into the military, he responded with strength.

The military is not a social experiment. The purpose of the military is kill people and break things, Huckabee said. Its not to transform the culture by trying out some ideas that some people think would make us a different country and more diverse. The purpose is to protect America. Im not sure how paying for transgender surgery for soldiers, sailors, airmen, marines makes our country safer.

Huckabees stance is not surprising given his Christian conservative background, but its still rare enough to hear this kind of talk in the political mainstream. Sadly, his comments will probably be used by the left to attack the GOP for being outdated and behind the times. That would be a great shame, because this isnt about your precious little LGBT movement. Huckabee didnt condemn transgender people. He merely laid out some common sense, something we dont hear enough of when it comes to Washington.

As pointed out by the other candidates, our military has become weaker, less populated, and less funded under President Obama. And while theres little reason to dump unnecessary amounts of money into the military at times of peace, you have to strike the right balance. You cant find yourself short when a conflict develops. And you cant treat the military like you would the rest of the U.S. government.

This is an age-old fight, but its one worth having again. The military isnt the T-ball team at your local rec center. Not everyone gets to play. Is it wise to draw the line at transgenders? Maybe, maybe not. But the line needs to be drawn somewhere. Unfortunately, those lines are being erased in the name of social progress. It may impress San Francisco loonies to have a military full of gays, transgenders, and women, but thats not really the point of the armed forces, is it?

Its one thing for progressives to ruin Hollywood with their idiotic notions of sexual diversity, but we should stand firm against their attempts to destroy the military. We need warriors, not activists. We need the brave, not the confused. Its nothing personal; its just the nature of the beast.
