If you plan to use Facebook for marketing you need a Business Page. Your Personal FB page or profile is limited to 5000 friends and you cannot use apps on your profile page.

Here are some things to keep in mind when setting up your Fan Page.
You need a Facebook account to set up a Business Page. (Yes, it's the same thing as a Fan Page)
You may set up more than one page.
Your Fan Page should have a focused theme and if you create several Fan Pages, do not promote one page on another page. Keep them separate, because narrowly focused themes are best.
Keep your title short because when you add content your title is added to each post.
Create page.
Go to http://www.facebook.com/pages/create.php?
Or log in to your Facebook account, go to the top right corner and click on the little
triangle for a drop down menu. Create Page is at the top.
1. On the 'Create a Page' screen you will have to choose a category - there are six.
a) Local business or place: If you choose this one, you need to select the category of your business or place and to supply the address of your business.
b) Company, organization or institution: If you go for this option, you'll need to select
the category of your company, organization, or institution, and to type in the name of your company.
c) Brand or product: For this option, you'll need to select the category of product and to supply the name of the product.
d) Artist, band, or public figure: Here you'll need to select the category for the type of artist, musician, or public figure you'll be promoting as well as his or her name.
e) Entertainment: If you go for this category, you'll need to supply the type of
entertainment as well as the name.
f) Cause or community: For this option, you'll have to type in the name of the
community.
Some changes can be made later, or you can delete the page and start over.
2. 'Set Up' page
a) 'About'. Fill in "Page Name" You can change this when you have less than 200
'likes'. Provide all the basic information needed.
b) 'Profile picture'. Upload it, or it can be skipped for now.
c) 'Reach More People'. FB is keen for you to start spending on ads. Skip.
Cover photo and profile image.

Choose an image that represents what your Page is about rather than an image of yourself. When it comes to an image please be careful. Do not use an offensive image or an image that contains the URL of a website. Facebook is strict on images.
Cover photos are 851 pixels wide and 315 pixels tall. If you upload an image that's
smaller than these dimensions, it will be stretched to this larger size and look bad.
The image you upload must be at least 399 pixels wide and 150 pixels tall.
Page profile pictures are square and display at 180x180 pixels on your Page.
