A bit of clarification is needed to help banish the myths and get to the truth about blogging.
Truth: It's going to take longer than you thought.
A lot of commitment is needed before you will see the expected results. It will take time - lots of time.
Truth: Blogging can improve your writing.
Mostly people don't care about your opinion. To make an impact with your blog you better be good - or become good. The more you write, the better you will become. If you have the potential. If not, you drop out. You will need feedback on your writing before making corrections.
Truth: Bloggers quickly run out of interesting topics.
Mostly true, mainly because very few people are creative or inventive enough. Coming up with new topics on a daily basis is difficult for some of us.
Truth: Authority blog.
To have an impact in your niche, you should aim to have your blog in the top 20 in your area of interest. You need to be seen as an authority.
Myth: You will become rich with blogging.
It's possible and it happens, but it is not guaranteed. Far from it. Most blogs make no money and never will.
Myth: Blogging is easy.
If you treat your blog as a business then it will not be easy. You need to be creative to come up with new ideas for blog articles, for great content. It takes effort to get enough traffic. To be popular you also need a unique perspective and voice. You need to add value and give first.
Myth: High traffic volumes will result in sales.
Probably not. Better to capture that traffic on your email list.
Myth: You need to plan it all out in detail before you start.
No, a lean startup is better. Just take the first step. It does not have to be perfect. Then adapt as you learn and plan as you go. Improvise.
Myth: Amazing content alone will do the trick.
If no one reads your content, your blog is in the online desert. Other things will be needed - guestblogging, social media interaction, networking with other bloggers, commenting on other blogs.
Myth: Your blog is all about you.
Not really. It's all about them - your readers - and whether you give them what they need.
Myth: Anyone can start a blog.
Maybe not just anyone. Except for the obvious hardware and internet requirements, there is the ability to express and the willingness to communicate your thoughts.
Myth: Blogging does not require much time.
For the casual blogger this may be true, but not for someone who is serious about blogging. Blogging is a daily activity for the serious blogger. Writing and posting once a day takes time.
Don't let things like this discourage you their only function is to help clarify the blogging phenomenon. A lot of people became famous against all odds and opposition.
Life should be fun - enjoy it!
