My first thoughts were that content goes viral because of luck,
serendipity, chance, timing or some other intangible factor.
That there is no rhyme or reason for this strange phenomenon.
It seems that most experts hold a different opinion on the subject
of contagious content.
If viral content is a bit of a mystery to you too, read on. With these 6
selected articles I will try to clarify the issue whether it is an art or a
science.
1. In the first article, the writer explains the 6 elements present in viral
content. This is a great introduction to the subject.
"As content marketers that have created viral content for the past seven
years, we strongly believe the listed elements can form the catalyst for
viral exposure when appropriately mixed."
2. This is about the common characteristics of viral videos and the key
reasons that people share content. A very detailed article.
"Unfortunately, virality is more of an art than a science. While there is no
tried-and-true formula for virality, there are some elements that we
consistently see -- and knowing what they are puts you one step closer
to attaining that viral glory."
3. In this article about viral content the writer shares some tips based on
research.
"But there really is a science to creating viral or near viral content, and
you can use that science to your advantage."
4. This article is about the 3 elements all viral content has in common, as
well as the different viewer reactions according to age and gender.
"To create a campaign that will be popular with men, women, Millennials
and Baby Boomers, its going to take more than a few cat pictures and
some Autotune."
Libert, Buffer.
5. In this article the authors first show how you can benefit from viral
marketing, and then how to create a viral marketing campaign.
"The bullhorn of radio, television, print and other one-way interruptive
marketing approaches are quickly losing efficacy. So how do you get
your brand noticed?"
By Kelsey Libert and Kristin Tynski.
6. Here the writer shares some useful ideas on how to get your content
to the viral stage.
"...getting your content promoted on social media has gotten tougher,
especially the free aspect of it. Gone are the days when you could put
up something interesting and youd get tons of engagement on it."
By Hunain Naseer, Content Extremist.
There you have it - viral content is not all spontaneous combustion.
It can be analyzed, understood and maybe replicated.
I'm still thinking there are some unknown factors involved, that it is
more of an art than a science. That it is possible to identify some of
the factors that caused content to go viral, but that it will be a
different matter to plan and execute such a campaign.
Any articles you know of that should be included here?
Let me know, please.
Life should be fun - enjoy it!
