Which of your hats do you put on while engaged in internet marketing - Black Hat, White Hat or something in between. It makes me think of the western movie, �The good, the bad and the ugly.�
Knowing the differences between the �hat� colors and the risks you take when you choose one over the other, will help keep you out of trouble with Google. If you attempt to manipulate the search engines, remember that Google don't tolerate practices that try to ignore their rules.
It is common knowledge that the safest techniques to follow in your marketing campaigns are the White Hat strategies. Remember the old cowboy movies where the hero always wore the white hat and triumphed over the bad guys who wore black hats? The implied differences in hat colors now becomes quite clear.
White Hat.
Marketers who use White Hat techniques are not malicious in intent or actual practice. They follow business practices that are considered ethical and acceptable by the industry. They do nothing that could be considered spamming others. They use techniques that the search engines approve of and are not trying to find and exploit loopholes in the systems. White Hat marketers tend to produce long term results.
To sum this up: A technique is white hat if there is no deception, if the marketer is creating content for users and not mainly for the search engines.
Grey Hat.
When marketers start to stretch the edges of what is legal and use somewhat shady methods to get what they want on other sites or to get around Google�s rules, they start veering off the benign White Hat path.
Some of the techniques used might be reverse engineering of trademarked or copyrighted software, or copying parts of articles and passing them off as their own. They may have found a loophole that will be closed once Google figures out what they are doing.
Black Hat.
A Black Hat can be a person who breaks computer security without permission to vandalize a site, steal identities, steal credit card information, or pirate another marketer�s proprietary information or processes.
A Black Hat marketer is someone who uses aggressive or illegal tactics, strategies or techniques to get better search engine rankings. It includes keyword stuffing, spam linking, spamdexing, hidden website links, scraped content and article spinning of copyrighted material, excessive cross-linking, cloaking, etc. All of these are techniques of which the search engines do not approve.
The black hat marketer's objective is short term financial gain � till the search engines discover what they are doing.
To summarize, black hat marketers don't care about the user experience the search engines try to create, so they use techniques that involve deception just to get better search engine results.
It is better to keep your White Hat on while involved with internet marketing. It may be slower but it will bring more permanent results with less risk.
