For more than a decade the blog was a great digital information dispenser, but this role is being taken over by new kids on the block. The evolution of sharing information is ongoing. The question is, will you and your blog be able to keep up, stay relevant and be competitive in this rapidly changing environment? Publishing will always be with us, but blogging as we know it will have to change or become obsolete.
A look at some popular blogs give an indication of what is coming. The normal trend of the mining gold rush is being played out online. Everyone jumped in to get a piece of the pie, but over time the better ones are becoming bigger and bigger. They are setting a standard that 99% of bloggers will find impossible to keep up with due to a lack of funds, experience, skills, knowledge, etc.
Look at what happened at Mashable, TechCrunch and HuffingtonPost. They evolved into modern day online magazines, each with a large staff of pro writers, editors and stuff the regular guy can't emulate.
In a popular niche like social media, take a look at the top ten social media blogs according to Social Media Examiner. Analyze them, then compare your blog and make some decisions. Or this group The top 10 social media bloggers you must follow.
Let us look at a few more facts and trends. To make an impact you and your blog need to be perceived as an authority in your chosen field or niche. To achieve that, your blog must be in the top 20. The higher the better, otherwise you are doomed for an uphill struggle.
The blogs with the highest search engine rankings have long-form articles of 1500 words, mostly more than 2000 words. No junk, just quality content. Infographics, video's, images, sound, all well researched and written by a pro. These blogs are populated with hundreds of articles, which is essential for success. All these are being done regularly. In most cases they are not one-person operations anymore and will be better able to adapt to new trends in social media.
People have little time and less inclination to read. Combine that with the effects of the mobile revolution and even the established blogs will battle to stay relevant. Will young people be likely to use mobile devices to post on a blog or regularly read blogs? I don't think so.
Nowadays people are tweeting, pinning, tumbling, updating, instagramming and sharing images. The whole system of sharing information is changing before our eyes. Readers are a dying breed.
In this new environment there are a couple of things to consider. Do you still need a blog? The answer depends on the role or purpose of your blog. There are a lot of alternative methods to reach your objectives.
If you are one of the people who want to earn money with a blog, not just blogging for the sake of blogging, this is aimed at you. Im talking about business blogging, where you are using a blog to distribute content and build a relationship with your customers and subscribers. If this is your goal, blogging pretty much sucks - and there definitely are other options available to you.
If you still want to try blogging as a means to earn money online, avoid the niches with stiff competition like social media, IM, health, dieting and dating. Identify something you are truly passionate about, in which you are an authority. You will need this passion and enjoyment to be consistent with you blogging - to keep you going while the results are slow in coming.
In conclusion, if these quotes apply to you regarding this passion of yours, then go for it. "Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life." ~ Confucius.
"People rarely succeed unless they have fun in what they are doing." ~ Dale Carnegie.
Life should be fun - enjoy it!
Henning Viljoen.
P.S. This is the best place to start blogging - you will find everything there.
