Learning to budget and dealing with money, can be a little confusing and scary for some people. If you find that you are in that situation, this article will give you some great tips that you need to start off on the right foot. It won't be long before you can gain better control of your finances.

The envelope system is a tried and true budgeting technique that can work well for those who have a hard time staying within their budget. Cash out your paycheck at each pay period and put a predetermined amount of cash into each envelope for each line on your budget. You can then only spend the cash that you have for each item. It prevents you from overspending as you have a visual for what is left.

If you have a credit card without a rewards program, consider applying for one that earns you miles. Combine a credit card that earns miles with a frequent flier rewards program from your favorite airline and you'll fly for free every now and again. Make sure to use your miles before they expire though.

Credit cards are convenient and more secure than a debit card. If your credit card application is approved, use it to buy everyday items, like food and gas. Some credit card companies even offer you the chance to earn rewards that can be used for cash back. The trick here is to pay off your balance each and every month. This reminds me of an old proverb- "owe no one", and a really hard lesson I had to learn in life about getting into debt.

Never withdraw a cash advance from your credit card. This option only rears its head when you are desperate for cash. There are always better ways to get it. Cash advances should be avoided because they incur a different, higher interest rate than regular charges to your card. Cash advance interest is often one of the highest rates your card offers.

Don't ever cosign on a loan for a friend or family member unless you are financially able and emotionally willing to take on the entire amount of the debt. Being a co-signer does not mean you are vouching for the trustworthiness of the other borrower; it means you are taking on responsibility for the loan if the other party fails to pay.

If you have managed your finances well enough to own a home and have a retirement account, don't jeopardize those by borrowing against them later. If you borrow against your home and can't repay it, you could lose your home; the same is true for your retirement fund. Borrow against them only in dire situations.

Whether you keep track of your personal finances online or on paper, it is extremely important to review your general situation every month. Look for any unexpected changes in your bills, shortfalls in your credits, or irregularities in the dates that money changes hands. Noting these changes and accounting for them is a big part of staying on top of your financial situation.

Being in charge of your personal finances may not be easy but having control of your money sure is beneficial. Take pride in the money that you have earned and use it wisely.
