I believe that of all the variables in the long road to success the most important is Belief. That might sound weird coming from an Engineer Engineers are normally given to logical, analytical and technical thought, rather than philosophical and motivational thought.
But think of this engineering is based partly on observation. Observing what has been successful in the past, analyzing it to find out why it worked, and adapting it to future designs. This approach is not limited to structures alone; it can also be applied to other areas of life.
So it is with wealth. Many internet marketing Gurus cite the fact (true or not) that by age 65, ninety-five percent of Americans are either dead or dead broke, and only one percent are wealthy. That begs an engineer-like analysis, not of the 99%, but of the 1% who have ended up wealthy. What did they do right that the rest did not do?
Such an analysis quickly reveals that nearly all of the 1% have many common characteristics. Those include: A vision Belief, in their vision and their ability to attain it A strong work ethic Perseverance, a never-give-up attitude The ability to focus A positive attitude.
In the next few posts I'll look at these six items. For now, let's look at Vision.
A vision is like a destination point on a roadmap. It defines where you want to go, and it is absolutely essential to your success. All the maps in the world will do you no good if you dont know where you want to go. Youll just drive aimlessly around wasting time and fuel in the process.
Sure, you might by some stroke of extreme luck end up at an acceptable, or even utopian, destination. However, the chances of that are somewhere between slim and none.
But a vision defines so much more than where you want to be at a certain point in the future. It can also define who you want to be when you reach your destination. In addition, a clear vision can be not only a great inspiration and a motivator, but it will assist you immensely in establishing your goals and objectives as you travel on the path to your destination. Regardless of the obstacles and challenges you meet along your journey, a clear vision will help you to understand what you're doing and why you're doing it. Especially in business, a vision is absolutely essential to success.
So how do you establish a vision? The first step is sorting out exactly what you want. Do you want to be healthy, wealthy or wise? And right here I want you to understand that having a vision of being rich is way too vague; you must be very specific in defining what you want.
Once youve established that, you should visualize yourself in whatever situation you've decided you want to be in. Visualization, while it may seem foolish to a lot of us, is an extremely powerful motivator. Many motivational professionals will tell you to create a physical picture that represents your final destination when you realize your vision, and to paste this picture where you will see it first thing every day. This may not be totally necessary, but what is necessary, is to have this vision clearly in your mind so that you never lose sight of it.
Stop now and take the time to establish your vision. Do some research to find out how, do some soul searching, and write down not just where you want to be at the end of your trip, but Why! Going beyond this point without doing this exercise will severely limit your chances of succeeding.
