In Internet marketing a list means a list of e-mail addresses through which potential customers can be contacted.  Because these lists contain information on potential customers, they are crucial to Internet marketing.

Why Build a List?

In sales, having some form of relationship with your customers makes selling to them a lot easier.  A customer going into a clothing store is much more likely to buy from that store if he knows and trusts the staff or the owner.  The same applies in Internet marketing.  If you have a list of people with whom you have some form of relationship and have built some degree of trust, they are much more likely to buy whatever you happen to be selling.

In addition, in that clothing store, if the store owner collects contact information on the customer, then that customer can be informed when a new shipment arrives.  This gives the owner the potential to invite that customer back and thus make more sales.  Without collecting the contact information this would not be possible.  The same applies for Internet marketing.

So you build your list and you use it to establish a firm base of regular customers to whom you can market your products and offers with ease.  Marketing to this list will increase your conversion rate dramatically.


How to Build Your List

An Internet marketing list is built through what is referred to as an opt-in form, or capture form.  The most effective place to put the capture form is on a stand-alone opt-in or capture page.  This web page will have only one purpose and that is to get your potential customers to subscribe to your list for one reason or another. Let me repeat that for emphasis; the purpose of the capture page is to get potential customers to subscribe to your opt-in list, period! This goal is best accomplished when your capture page has nothing extra on it and is focused completely on collecting information on potential customers.

It is possible to have the capture form installed directly onto your website, it just requires copying and pasting a bit of html code. However, this is much less effective than a stand-alone capture page because of all the distractions that are on the website.

With a properly designed capture page the potential customer has only two choices, to subscribe or not to subscribe. The actual capture form should always be above the fold on the capture page, so that visitors do not need to scroll down to see it.  Paying attention to small details like these will greatly increase the odds of that customer being added to your list.

Who do You Want on Your List?

The question of who you want on your list is answered fairly simply; you want someone who is looking for whatever it is you are selling.  This is your targeted market, and this is who your capture page and your advertising must be set up for.  If you�re trying to sell oranges to someone who is looking for oranges, it is much easier than trying to sell apples to that same person. Too many Internet marketers are simply trying to sell their products or services to the wrong market.  Do not fall into that trap.

So how do you ensure that the people subscribing to your capture page are actually looking for whatever you are selling?  Well this is the dilemma of every marketer, and the answer lies in where you are doing your marketing.

If you�re advertising in the newspaper for example, you can place your ad in the appropriate department.  If you�re buying traffic from a particular supplier online, you can normally specify what you want the interests of that traffic to be.  If you are doing Pay Per Click advertising, proper keyword selection will get your Ad in front of the right people. If you are doing article marketing you can choose your categories and keywords.

In some cases your traffic may come from just a general group of people with no classification or sorting.  In that case your advertising might get a higher response, but the conversion rate of prospects to buyers might be significantly lower.  You just have to be aware of what you are looking for and target it in the best way possible.
