An increasing number of women are turning to the internet in hopes of finding work. From supplemental part-time work to help pay a few bills, to full-time opportunities, women of all ages are seeking jobs online.
From teens, to young mothers, to middle-aged women and even seniors. The internet is home to an array of opportunities for individuals with a variety of skills. Of course, women who have more sophisticated technical skills and/or a special ability, such as writing skills, tend to have access to a greater number of opportunities. But as computers, mobile devices and the internet become the nexus of the business world and millions of peoples' personal lives, an increasing number of online work opportunities have become available.
But why are so many women especially young mothers turning to the internet instead of a traditional workplace? It seems the attraction is two-fold: an increasing number of web-based opportunities, combined with few (or poor) local opportunities for traditional employment.
Working online provides you with flexibility tremendous flexibility as you can work in virtually any location. All you need is an internet connection. This fact alone serves as a tremendous draw to online work opportunities. The ability to work at home is an absolute financial lifesaver for many families. The reason? Consider the reality of what it means for a mother (or father) to work outside the home.
Firstly, there's child care. This alone can make it impossible for many women to work outside the home, as the cost of child care can easily cancel out your earnings if you work at a low-paying job. What's more, who wants to miss out on their child's childhood? Do you really want a stranger raising your child? (And make no mistake 40-hour-per-week childcare providers are essentially raising your child. They're spending more time with your child than you are, right?) Your child is only young once; parents want to witness their child's childhood! But you also want to earn money so you can provide your child with all the best things in life. When they work outside the home, many parents are forced to choose between witnessing their child's childhood and earning money that would allow them to provide a better life for their child. It's an impossible situation.
Childcare aside, there's also the issue of transportation. To work outside the home means you must have a vehicle and you must fuel that vehicle an expensive proposition. Public transportation is available in some regions, but what you save in terms of money, you typically lose in terms of time (and if you're paying for child care, time means money!)
These two points alone childcare and transportation place many parents in a difficult, no-win situation when it comes to working outside of the home. But working online solves these problems.
Money that would otherwise go toward transportation, childcare, lunch and work clothes can go toward other things, like paying bills, purchasing health insurance, building a retirement fund, investments or a college fund for your child. This places women and their families in an improved position not only today, but in the future as well. In fact, this is key because an increasing number of employers are cutting their benefits packages due to the difficult economy. So many men and women who work outside the home are losing their insurance, investments, and retirement packages. Working online and at home places you in a position where you can compensate for those losses.
What's more, the internet is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. And the web serves the entire earth, so while it may be 12 midnight on one side of the globe, it's 12 in the afternoon on the opposite side of the planet. This means that there's a constant flow of work opportunities; this allows for tremendous flexibility in terms of when you work a selling point that's absolutely essential for many mothers, who require work-related flexibility due to their busy schedules.
Many women also favor working on the web because gender, age, race and even socio-economic status are less of a factor. On the web, there's a much greater emphasis on an individual's talents, abilities and the end product. This is significant for many women, as in many regions of the world, age, gender, race and economic status can have a dramatic impact on one's work opportunities. But the web is essentially blind to these factors; it's a place where an individual's abilities, skills and talents matter most.
It's estimated that more than two-thirds of the world's more than 7 billion people go online daily. And that number is rapidly growing, which means we can expect to see an increasing number of opportunities when it comes to working online.
When you find the right job online, you may be one of the fortunate people who quickly realizes that it no longer seems like work because you truly, genuinely enjoy what you do. We should all be so fortunate to find a position where you can do what you love, without making tremendous sacrifices. In this way, the internet is a field of dreams; a place where you can live to work, instead of feeling as though you must work to live. It's a place where you can improve your own life and your family's life today and in the future. It's a place of endless opportunity.
