Fasting is actually work. It takes a lot of effort. That seems strange at first, but thinking back over the past few days I realize the effort it took to succeed required a number of skills. Skills are required every day in life in one form or another to accomplish everything we do. It is no different when you want to achieve something meaningful for yourself.
Commitment...
Fasting requires commitment. A very serious commitment. Just like the commitment you need to do a job of any kind well. Without a commitment at the start of a fast the body will eventually win and force you back to your old ways.
Your commitment starts and ends with a serious desire. Should you ever think that entering a fast with idea you will "try" it, you will probably not make it through the first day without sneaking some kind of food.
Goal...
If you think you can go into a fasting without a goal, you are probably just fooling yourself. You need to know where you are going. Without some kind of goal when you go into a fast, what's the point of doing it?
Your desire may be to rid yourself of all the toxins that you know are in your body from all the fast food you eat. Or it may be a spiritual need you have to focus on God and nature and not on all the worldly glitz every day. And maybe it is to lose weight. Well, how much weight?
Attached to the primary goal of what it is you want to accomplish, you will need to set a length of time. One day, two days, three days. That choice is personal, but it must be set in stone so that you and your body knows what will be required and for how long in order for this activity to succeed.
Whatever it is, to be successful, you need to voice it to your subconscious mind and write it down so you can see your goal and your desire throughout every day of the fast.
Action...
The first two steps are a bit difficult, I agree. Getting through and over them helps tremendously in order for you to get into the action step.
Action in this case means you will stop putting anything into your body except purified water after a certain meal. Make your commitment to stop after breakfast, lunch or dinner. It doesn't matter which. You must chose one and stick with it.
Then you must pick a day to take that action. I suggest you try to pick a day several days in the future when you know pretty well there will be nothing to conflict with your daily schedule or the fasting.
