Fasting vs. Dieting

Fasting has been a small part of my life for many years.  I started fasting back in the 70s mainly as a spiritual act of contrition or cleansing.  After I got use to doing a fast, and it does take considerable mental adjustment, I was able to engage fairly easily to the lack of food.  Pure honest fasting is limited to water, 8 to 10 glasses a day.

As I aged the desire to fast frequently pops up in my mind, but the lure of cooking and eating always seems to get in the way.  Consequently the issue of excess body weight gets involved and I am lured into doing a diet of some kind.  Diets always seem to fail for me as I know they do for most people.

One of the latest diets I used was The 8 Hour Diet.  This one allows you to eat anything you want within any 8 hour period.  You need to set up a mental discipline and a complete routine change in your daily life to live up to this one.

The concept seems simple at first, but realize when time restrictions are put on your eating habits, some kind of resistance sets up in your mind and you end up wanting to eat outside that limitation regardless the ultimate benefit.

Consequently, for me, fasting is not only an effective spiritual cleansing but a fasting method of dieting and losing weight.  That is what I am doing this weekend.  I started fasting after dinner on Thursday and Im now into day three.  So far Ive lost 8 pounds.

Usually I dont lose over 3 to 4 pounds when I fast for 3 days.  This time it is quite different and Im not sure why this has been so successful this time.  I plan on taking the fast to a total loss of 10 pounds.  Based on the current results that should not be a problem, unless my body decides it is time to sit on a plateau for a while, which my body often does during a fast.

If you are interested in fasting and how to get involved, there is a good book available with excellent guidelines and nutrition information that you should know about before you start fasting.  The book is by Patricia and Paul Bragg called The Miracle of Fasting .
