Memory systems always amaze me. I read about them whenever I see something new. However, too often, I forget to use them. Consequently my short term memory fails frequently.
The primary system I use and learned many years ago is the peg system. This system ties names to numbers. You need to memorize the words associated with the numbers 1 - 10. It doesn't stop there. Words can associated to numbers out to infinity if you wish. To keep this simple I am just suggesting a few numbers to start.
When you want to remember a shopping list or the steps in a repair project or aTo Do List, create a picture of the task or item in your mind and add it to the picture of the word associated to the number.
Let's say your shopping list today begins with milk. It is the first item on the list. It equals the number one. The peg system assigns the word "toe" to the number one. To remember that you need milk when you go to the grocery store picture in your mind, for instance, you leaning down to pour milk over your big toe. Or you could picture a quart of milk popping out of your big toe.
The concept of popping is new to me. I just read about that concept a couple days ago in a simple book I found on Amazon. Pop Memory Palace by Sherm Mason. Understanding how the memory works is critical to success with any memory system. Action in your memory picture is vital to good remembering for long duration. The concept of popping is a terrific tool.
I would also suggest you get Harry Lorayne's Memory Book through Amazon.com and take a serious look at learning the peg memory system if you are having any trouble remembering lists or even where you left your glasses.
