15 So it was, when the angels had gone away from them into heaven, that the shepherds said to one another, Let us now go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has come to pass, which the Lord has made known to us. 16 And they came with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the Babe lying in a manger. 17 Now when they had seen Him, they made widely known the saying which was told them concerning this Child. 18 And all those who heard it marveled at those things which were told them by the shepherds.
Reflections:
Isnt it interesting that the only visitors to the manger scene were shepherds? The traditional Wise Men werent there. They wouldnt arrive, bearing their precious gifts, for perhaps two more years (Matt 2:11 [they came into a house, not to a manger setting]; Matt 2:16).
What did those shepherds find when they arrived at that simple manger setting? Well, there was a mom and a dad, a baby in a hay-filled feeding trough, or box, wrapped in swaddling cloth strips, and some animals bedding down for the night with their accompanying pungent odors permeating the night air. Perhaps, as Bible dictionaries point out, this was an open fenced-in area with an overhanging ledge or projection from the Inn that was used as a stall. This seems to be all Joseph, Mary and baby Jesus were offered that night.
But once those shepherds got a glimpse of the Christ child they went everywhere heralding the good news of great joy to all people! Everyone they met marveled at those things which were told them by the shepherds.
But why were only shepherds called to this lowly scene? Why werent the more affluent and influential invited? Perhaps we can find our answer in what Jesus taught his disciples many years later.
A shepherd has compassion on his sheep and meets their every need. he (Jesus) was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd Matt 9:36).
A shepherd knows his sheep. I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine (Jn 10:14).
The Lord is my Shepherd (Psalm 23).
A shepherd will give his life for his sheep. I am the good shepherd the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep (Jn 10:11).
We are so blessed to have a real Good Shepherd thank you, Jesus!
