Matthew 11:28-30 (New King James Version)

28 Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.

Reflections:

Until a soul comes to Christ they carry around a cumulative burden of sin which grows greater as each day passes. It literally sucks the life out of the unsaved and drives them to do something, anything just to numb the pain, i.e. psychologists, psychiatrists, substance abuse, ungodly sexual relationships, perversion, and on and on the list goes.

Some folks head for religion, hoping perhaps it will ease the pain and relieve some of the burden theyre bearing. Unfortunately religion preaches good works and behavior modification which can never truly lighten the load. The result is that the burden just doesnt go away. As a matter of fact it gets even heaver now that the person is striving religiously; struggling to be good and to earn their way into relief.

Real relief comes to a person when they genuinely come to Christ. This requires an awareness of, and a deep desire to turn away from sin and its consequences. The Bible gives a very clear pattern for becoming saved. Its found in Acts 2:37-38. Although much of the church has sadly modified this pattern, it remains unquestionably the clearest salvation instruction in the entire Bible. Here it is:

Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?
38 Then Peter said to them, Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:38). This biblical pattern requires only a heart surrendered to Christ not good works!

One of the ways we can know it (salvation) is working is by measuring the weight of the burden we now bear. Does our burden remain heavy, or hasnt it in fact become easier and lighter -- just as Jesus promised? Jesus always keeps His promise
