9 Then the LORD said to Cain, Where isAbel your brother?
He said, I do not know. Am I my brothers keeper?
11 For this is the message that you heard from the beginning, that we should love one another, 12 not as Cain who was of the wicked one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his works were evil and his brothers righteous. we know love, because He (Jesus) laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. 17 But whoever has this worlds goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him? 18 My little children, let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth.
Reflections:
In answer to the question Cain asked in our first verse, the answer is, yes! Weare to be our brothers keeper. Christianity is not about me and mine its about God and His! If we seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, He will more than take care of the rest of our needs.
Instead of being our brothers keeper, we have, unfortunately, had the opposite modeled to us. If weve been a Christian long enough, weve seen what happens with brothers, or sisters in the Lord that do not toe the line as expected. Perhaps youve heard the expression, Christians bury their wounded. I can speak to this first hand, because Ive been guilty of doing so; more than once. But, by the grace of God, no more!
We are called by God to make heroic attempts at unity if at all possible. We mustnt play into the devils hands and become his pawn in aiding and abetting him in his desire to steal, kill and to destroy. Its time to say, no! We do well to remember that we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places (Eph 6:12).
It would seem wise to ask the Holy Spirit why a brother or sister is acting the way they are (or why were acting the way we are towards them). This might very well avoid a satanic victory over one of Gods children. Many true Christians walk earths troubled sod with deep, unresolved, emotional pain inside, and nobody really seems to want to listen.
Perhaps we should pay a little more attention to that old expression, Hes more to be pitied than censored, and have some Holy Spirit-led compassion because we definitely are called to be our brothers keeper
