1 Samuel 17:45-47 (NKJV)
45 Then David said to the Philistine, You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin. But I come to you in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. 46 This day the LORD will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you and take your head from you. And this day I will give the carcasses of the camp of the Philistines to the birds of the air and the wild beasts of the earth, that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel. 47Then all this assembly shall know that the LORD does not save with sword and spear; for the battle is the LORDs, and He will give you into our hands.
Reflections:
This is an amazing account of a young lad with an unquestionably enormous faith in God. What the armies of King Saul couldnt do, this young man did without even blinking an eye. When David was told that Goliath was challenging and taunting Sauls armies his instant response was, For who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?
Mind you now, Goliath was huge. It is calculated that he was nine feet six inches tall. He had a bronze helmet on his head, and he was armed with a coat of mail, and the weight of the coat was five thousand shekels of bronze. And he had bronze armor on his legs and a bronze javelin between his shoulders. Now the staff of his spear was like a weavers beam and his iron spearhead weighed six hundred shekels; and a shield-bearer went before him.
It seemed like David would have to get by the shield bearer before he could even reach Goliath. Well, we know how the account goes; one smooth stone left Davids sling like a guided missile, soaring right over the armor bearer, and hitting Goliath in the forehead -- and it was over! Oh, to have that kind of faith
Truth be known we have even better than that. We have the full delegated authority of the Lord Jesus Christ himself. Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you (Lk 10:19).
It does take a bit of faith to function in our delegated authority, but once we get the hang of it; theres not much more the devil can do to us because, No weapon formed against you shall prosper, and every tongue which rises against you in judgment You shall condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and their righteousness is from Me, says the LORD (Isa 54:17).
Only one question remains: will we be willing to take up our smooth stone, and sling, and enter the fray like David did, and actually use it?
