Mk 16:6b (KJV)
he is risen; he is not here
Reflections:
Oh, to have seen the expression on Mary Magdalenes face when she heard those words, He is risen! Stunned, disoriented and perplexed would probably not even come close to describing what she was feeling. She stood there trembling along with the other women at the report of the angels. Her response to the supposed gardener was one of unbelief, where have you taken him? I can hear her desperately begging Please! Please! tell me, what have you done with Him!
Not only were the women stunned, but so were the disciples who responded with the same doubt when they received the initial report. You see everyone was responding as though it was over; that Jesus was dead -- end of story. The woman were bringing sweet spices to anoint Jesus, and the men, for the most part, were hiding out for fear of the Jews waiting for everything to blow over so that they could ultimately return to their occupations.
Perhaps they could only conceive of Jesus as the amazing son of man sent from God. The one who spoke of true holiness and a great morality similar to that of what many might feel of Confucius or Mohammed nowadays. No matter what though, they could never ever forget His incredible teachings and miracles, but as for His resurrection -- they just didnt get it! Their responses disclosed their true feelings of unbelief.
However, for Magdalene it took only one small word to change it all -- to bring the reality of Jesus resurrection to bear. It was that word the supposed gardener gently spoke to this weeping, trembling, once severely demonized, woman who now mourned the loss of her master. He turned to her and spoke her name, Mary as only Jesus could speak it. Her emotions must have burst amidst sobs of joy unspeakable; the sublime reality of the moment instantly causing her to cry out, Rabboni! (master), its you! Oh, it really is you!
As for us, blessed are they that have not seen and yet have believed HE IS RISEN!!!
