For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;)

Matthew 5:38-39 (KJV)

38 Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth: 39 But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.

Reflections:

One thing these verses mean is that we dont respond to insult or injury like the world does. Displays of anger, violence or bitterness are unacceptable in a Christians life. Never once do we see Jesus defending himself physically; even all the way to the cross. We as Christians are to replicate this lifestyle so that the world will see a difference -- so that they will see Christ in and through us.

Unfortunately most of us seem self-justified, when someone wrongs us, in responding in like fashion. And whats worse we then justify our actions with ungodly excuses. We as Christians know this is not how our Lord taught us to respond.

Perhaps it all boils down to the truth that we really dont believe that God will intervene for us, and so we take matters into our own hands. We dont truly believe that vengeance belongs to Him, and that he will do whats right. Perhaps we simply lack faith.

Whatever happened to Be still and know that I am God, or Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit saith the Lord? You might be saying, Ill never be able to respond like that consistently. Youre right; Jesus said that without Him we can do nothing.

But now that the Holy Spirit indwells all true believers, there really is no excuse. All we have to do is bow our prideful knee a bit, repent and admit we just cant do it on our own. What we can do though is to desire to walk in the power of the Spirit. This desire allows the Holy Spirits power to rise up in us and to turn the other cheek time and time again, just like Jesus did (Isa 53:7)
