37And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full. 38And he was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say unto him, Master, carest thou not that we perish? 39And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. 40And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith?
Reflections:
There are times when we embark on a specific spiritual journey and for some reason we stop short of the finish line. It could be in the area of a healing, broken past relationship, the healing of our marriages, or fully divesting ourselves of the trash of our past so that we can finally live in our own skin -- and more importantly, before God.
Or perhaps we have let go and lost hope of the miracle of salvation for a loved one -- and so weve stopped praying and believing. Many of us have prayed for the healing of our bodies, or for the bodies of those we love, but when we saw no change, weve all but given up hope (in Jesus).
Our spiritual journeys always start out full of faith and hope until we inevitably sail into one of those storms of spiritual resistance. Instead of keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus we begin to focus on the storm (just like his disciples did that day). We become frightened or discouraged by the magnitude of the swelling of the waves, and the relative size of our little faith vessel.
What I want to say today is that its not so much the size of our faith-vessel that counts (one the size of a mustard seed would do just fine); its that Jesus is on board! Thats what counts! But just think for a moment -- Hes always on board; He lives within us! He may appear, at times, to be sleeping, but hes just waiting for us to cry out to Him and say, Master, without you were just not going to make it! It was only then that He arose and spoke directly to the wind and the waves: peace, be still and, of course, they obeyed!
So how about we get back up on our feet and finish what we began, Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ (Phil 1:6)
