2 Chronicles 25:1-2 (King James Version)
1Amaziah was twenty and five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned twenty and nine years in Jerusalem. And his mother's name was Jehoaddan of Jerusalem. 2And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, but not with a perfect heart.
Reflections:
There are many Christians who, like King Amaziah in the Old testament, want the best of both kingdoms: the treasures of the kingdoms of earth, and the best that heaven has to offer too. Many of us do just enough to get by with God (or at least we think so), and at the same time believe that we can participate in the worship of the false gods of this world.
We dont have to list any of these false gods here because, if were truly saved, we already know what they are. Thats one of the Holy Spirits tasks within us: to convict our hearts of those things that are displeasing to God. If theres no conviction of sin at all, then the issue becomes one of whether or not a professing Christian is even saved.
In verse two we read: But not with a perfect heart. Lets zero in on this word perfect by looking at some of the various translation of the Bible:
The NIV uses the word wholeheartedly
The NKJV uses the word loyal
The Amplified Bible uses the word blameless
Lets plug these words into our verse: 2And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, but not wholeheartedly or with a loyal and blameless heart. You see Amaziah knew that what he was doing would be offensive to God, but he did it anyway just like many professing Christians today.
The night is far spent, the day is at hand. Therefore let us cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light. Let us walk properly, as in the day, not in revelry and drunkenness, not in lewdness and lust, not in strife and envy. But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts (Rom 13:12-14).
