John 3:6-8 (NKJV)
6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Do not marvel that I said to you, You must be born again. 8 The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit.
Reflections:
These verses are lifted out of Jesus talk with Nicodemus regarding the new birth. Nicodemus, no matter how hard he tried, had a difficult time understanding the spiritual realm and therefore kept bringing it back around to the natural realm. He was confined to logic and reason while Jesus was tugging him towards the wind (Spirit).
Many a Christian, even though born again, remain satisfied in the Nicodemus rut of logic and reason and as a result never experience what it is truly like to be Spirit-led; soaring high above said logic and reason. You might be thinking, This sounds a little out there, and that I may be being a bit over-spiritual here. I guess thats how Nicodemus must have felt about Jesus during his conversation with him.
The real problem comes down to this: you simply cannot deal with a spiritual problem in the natural realm of the mind. It doesnt work there. A spiritual problem must be dealt with in our spirit-heart versus the mind. Ultimately we will understand the spiritual revelation with the mind, but the work must first be birthed in our spirit-heart. This is what Jesus was trying to tell Nicodemus, That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
Okay, so how do we span this great divide from flesh to spirit? Actually its quite simple. When we received Christ and were given a new heart (1 Cor 15:22) -- we also received spiritual tools. These tools consist of things like faith (Eph 2:8-9), prayer (Lk 11:9) and the written word of God (2 Tim 3:16).
Only when we finally give up on our own ability to effectively change ourselves, and unconditionally surrender our heart to the workings of the Holy Spirit, can the real spiritual work begin. At this point of self-disengagement the tools will all make sense and we will begin to be Spirit-led, taught and wrought simply because of what Jesus said, that which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
And by the way, whatever we hear from the Holy Spirit will always sit squarely on the written word of God, the Bible ...
