12Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.

Reflections:

Before I understood this phrase ï¿½for this is the law and the prophets a little better it always came across to me as very demanding and legalistic. But as I began to look behind the law I began to see the heart of God unfolding in the Old Testament. Verses like the following ones allowed me a glimpse of the Fathers love and compassion for his people:

Thou shalt not kill. Thou shalt not commit adultery. Thou shalt not steal. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour's  (Ex 20:13-17).

Woe to those who decree unrighteous decrees, who write misfortune, which they have prescrembed to rob the needy of justice, and to take what is right from the poor of My people, that widows may be their prey, and that they may rob the fatherless (Isa 10:1-2).

He judged the cause of the poor and needy; then it was well. Was not this knowing Me? says the Lord (Jer 22:16).

Thus speaketh the LORD of hosts, saying, Execute true judgment, and shew mercy and compassions every man to his brother: and oppress not the widow, nor the fatherless, the stranger, nor the poor; and let none of you imagine evil against his brother in your heart (Zech 7:9-10).

God didnt all of a sudden become a God of mercy and grace once the Old Testament was complete and the New Testament began. He has always been a God of mercy and grace. Lets finish up with this Old Testament prophetic proclamation:

The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn; To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he might be glorified (Isa 61:1-3).  These verse are filled with compassion, mercy and grace
