John 15:1-4 (NKJV)
15 I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. 2 Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit. 3 You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. 4 Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me.
Reflections:
Hey wait a minute! Thats not a picture of a grapevine, thats a cucumber vine! Well, I really wanted to talk about cucumbers, but unfortunately Jesus didnt mention them. In that both grapes and cucumbers grow on a vine I thought it would be okay. After all, Jesus didnt say whether it was a grapevine or not (I know Im pushing it).
Many folks probably dont even know that cucumbers come from a vine. Did you know that if we took a thermometer and were to stick it in the middle of a cucumber (one thats attached to its vine) that the temperature inside the cucumber could be up to 20 degrees cooler than the temperature on the outside?
Of course this is where we get the expression, he's as cool as a cucumber. Even when everything is heating up around us, and as long as were attached to the vine, were cool.
On the other hand if, for some reason, we become detached from the vine (our true source of strength) and things around us begin to heat up, guess what? Right, were going to lose our cool.
In verse 5 of this same chapter Jesus goes on to say, I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.
Cucumber or not, we need to stay connected to the vine
