1 And He looked up and saw the rich putting their gifts into the treasury, 2 and He saw also a certain poor widow putting in two mites. 3 So He said, Truly I say to you that this poor widow has put in more than all; 4 for all these out of their abundance have put in offerings for God, but she out of her poverty put in all the livelihood that she had.
Reflections:
It should be noted here that Jesus isnt putting down the rich for giving out of their abundance, but rather commending the love for, and total faith in, God that motivated this poor widow into giving all. She had only two mites. This would have equaled 1/8th of a U.S. cent. That was it; it was all she had.
This woman was way beyond poor. She could have been very bitter toward God for having lost her husband (perhaps the very reason for her poverty) but she obviously wasnt.
She was a show-stopper as Jesus watched the gift-giving in the temple that day. He was obviously impressed by her self-less giving; so much so that He made an object lesson out of her. Do you think God blessed her that day? Ill bet he did
