Matthew 27:50-53 (NKJV)
50 And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His spirit. 51 Then, behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth quaked, and the rocks were split, 52 and the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised; 53 and coming out of the graves after His resurrection, they went into the holy city and appeared to many.
Reflections:
The veil that prevented access into the most holy place (except by the high priest once a year) was at last opened. It was torn from top to bottom as though God reached down and joyously ripped open the way into His warm and welcoming presence able at last to have fellowship with His most prized of all creation!
The earth split asunder and graves were gloriously yielding up their buried treasure. At long last heavens gates could swing open wide for a portion its long awaited bride; those that had been redeemed by the perfect blood of the New Covenant The precious blood of Gods own dear son, the Lord Jesus the Christ!
Who were those saints that filled the air? They were the Old Testament believers who longed for their Messiah; their sins having been covered (not cancelled) by faith, i.e. Even as Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness (Gal 3:6).
It wouldnt be long, just three more days and Paradise would be emptied forever and the Old Testament saints of God would be led triumphantly to heaven and into the awaiting arms of the great I AM!
And then there was one other -- a repentant thief who hung on a cross beside Jesus whose last request was, Lord, remember me when You come into Your kingdom. And Jesus said to him, Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise. (Lk 23:42-43).
Hows all that for grace and mercy ?
