Luke 15:21-24 (King James Version)
21And the son said unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in thy sight, and am no more worthy to be called thy son. 22But the father said to his servants, Bring forth the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet: 23And bring hither the fatted calf, and kill it; and let us eat, and be merry: 24For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found. And they began to be merry.
Reflections:
Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the LORD your God is giving you (Ex 20:12). This is on Gods top ten list of His desire for us. Could this have been the final revelation that drove the prodigal back home and into his fathers longing arms?
Was rebellion the driving force that so distanced the prodigal from his fathers love in the first place: the drive to experience life -- the freedom to do whatever feels good, whenever he wanted to, without the restraints of his fathers God-given authority? So how did it all work out? -- Not so good? -- It never does. Wanting to eat pigs food and not even being able to acquire it; now thats pretty low on the ladder of what the prodigal thought would be fun and success.
The bible tells us that rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry (1 Sam 15:23a). We live in a generation where rebellion is second to none. Our society, like Lots in Sodom and Gomorrah, not only condones rebellion, but tries to make it the law of the land!
Well, the prodigal was one of the fortunate ones; he figured it out and found his way back to his father who rejoiced exceedingly beyond the prodigals wildest imagination or expectations. For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found. And they began to be merry.
What about us as Christians? Are we living in secret rebellion? Have we distanced ourselves from our heavenly Father through our poor choices? We mustnt wait until our sin finds us out -- and it will! Quickly! Lets run back right now and cry out Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in thy sight, and am no more worthy to be called thy son.
