John 8:31-36 (NKJV)
31 Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. 32 And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
33 They answered Him, We are Abrahams descendants, and have never been in bondage to anyone. How can You say, You will be made free?
34 Jesus answered them, Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin. 35 And a slave does not abide in the house forever, but a son abides forever. 36Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.
Reflections:
And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. Ah yes, this is a very commonly used verse which brings comfort and hope to many a soul that is bound to sin addictions or to their past.
But why doesnt it always bring the desired result? Everyone believes it is the truth (the word of God), but not everyone reaps its benefits. I believe one answer may be that its only the b part of the verse 31 that were embracing; and without the a part it will not bear the hoped for result.
Firstly, in the a part, Jesus was speaking specifically to believers (those Jews who believed Him). So if youre truly saved this verse is for you. But next we have the qualifier, If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. To abide means to dwell (not just to visit occasionally).
Jesus spoke beautifully of abiding in John 15:7, If you abide in me and my words abide in you, you shall ask whatever you will, and it will be done unto you. It seems clear that abiding in Christ is the answer to the truth setting us free.
To some this seems difficult or impossible to do. How can I spend all my time reading Gods word or praying? Thats just not practical. Ive got work, kids, responsibilities and the list goes on and on.
Abiding does mean times of reading Gods word, prayer and worship, times of fellowship with other believers, but most importantly it means a deep heart to heart relationship with God all day long where we allow Gods word to direct our paths and to affect our choices and decisions. A surrendered, yielded Christian will find no trouble applying todays promise for it is Gods good pleasure to gives us the keys to His kingdom and all it has to offer the believer
