Mark 15:37-39 (KJV)
37And Jesus cried with a loud voice, and gave up the ghost. 38And the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom. 39And when the centurion, which stood over against him, saw that he so cried out, and gave up the ghost, he said, Truly this man was the Son of God.
Reflections:
The Bible gives us no dimensions for this veil in Herods temple, however, it is said that there were two curtains separating the holy place from the holy of holies. Each curtain was 4 inches thick with a height of approximately 60 feet by a length of approximately 33 feet each.
It has been estimated that the curtains weighed approximately 4 to 6 tons depending on the materiel used. The Talmud claims that it took some 300 priest to carry it to its place. The first century Jewish historian Josephus also tells us that the veil was four inches thick and that horses tied to each side could not pull the veil apart.
In any event the message was clear: Jesus, through his atoning death on the cross, had ripped the impregnable veil of separation from top to bottom and restored fellowship between God and man.
For the true believer there was, we might say, an impregnable veil in place in our hearts that separated us from Gods presence because of sin. The weight and magnitude of that sin/veil has crushed many a soul into hopelessness and ultimately into the pangs of eternal hell itself. Jesus death rent that veil from top to bottom also; and because of it we were spiritually made free and alive now having full access by faith into the Holy of Holies, where God dwells, any time we like -- day or night!
