Reflections:
No guile! So whats guile anyway? Guile is slyness and cunning in dealing with others; deceit. You might say of Nathanael, What you see is what you get. This was quite a compliment coming from Jesus He didnt say this about anyone else.
Nathanael is only mentioned in the Gospel of John although some believe he was the Bartholomew mentioned in the other three gospels. If he was, history records that he was skinned alive and then beheaded for his testimony of Jesus.
Jesus statement, Behold an Israelite indeed (verse 47) seems to mean that Nathanael was a genuine, quality of heart Jew; one who deeply believed in the promise of a coming Messiah. Perhaps this is another of the qualities that Jesus saw in Him.
Whatever it was, I would sure like to be like Nathanael and hear Jesus say, in whom there is no guile about me wouldnt you?
