4The LORD talked with you face to face in the mount out of the midst of the fire, 5 saying, 6I am the LORD thy God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage. 7Thou shalt have none other gods before me.
Reflections:
Many would say that this verse, that was part of the law given at Mount Sinai, is no longer in effect -- that we are no longer subject to it in that we are no longer under the Law. We are free from its demands as to who, or what we choose to worship. Sounds absurd doesnt it? Of course God still means what he said back then.
Some things never change and so it is so with the Ten Commandments. The only difference between then and now is that God no longer has to demand our obedience to his law, because He has written it on the very tablets of our hearts. Under the New Covenant of grace those that love and honor God do so out of a heart of thanksgiving. They do so because of the unthinkable sacrifice that Christ made, not only on the cross but through the beatings, scorn and humiliation leading up to the cross.
How is it then that so many professing Christians walk as though they believe they no longer have to live to please God, but can rather sin at will; being free from the law and its consequences? If your one that feels this way you are in for a rude awakening. Perhaps youre already feeling its ill effects on your emotions, or in the well-being of your physical body.
God will not play second fiddle to other gods of gold, silver and the carnal pleasures that this world has to offer? Im reminded of what He said, I am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me (Ex 20:5). Believe you me, nothing has changed and you can be sure your sin will find you out (Num 32:23).
Its true that all the born-again Christian has to do is repent and confess his sin to God and he will be forgiven (1 John 1:9). However if he, like a dog, continually returns to the same vomit he was purged of, has he ever truly repented? Is he really forgiven? Whose fooling who?
If youre continuing in known sin, perhaps now is the time to get down to business with the Holy Spirit and truly get healed ?
