1 Therefore, laying aside all malice, all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and all evil speaking, 2 as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby, 3 if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is gracious.
Reflections:
We all know what a newborn baby cries for milk! If the newborn didnt want milk we would become very concerned as to its well being.
Our verse today is making a comparison between a newborn baby and a new born-again Christian. And just as a new-born baby desires milk so does a new-born believer desire the milk of the word. If they dont we should be concerned for their well being.
Its interesting how our verses progress:
Therefore, laying aside all malice, all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and all evil speaking. (This verse speaks of turning from our sin to Christ).
as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby. (This verse speaks of what should happen).
if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is gracious. (This verse tells us why it should happen; or perhaps why it doesnt happen).
I know that whenever a person comes to me with a defeated Christian life, the very first thing I do is to establish whether or not they had a viable salvation experience.
Were they confronted with sin and truly repented?
Did they invite Christ into their life as Savior and Lord?
Do they have a genuine supernatural hunger for the Word of God?
Has God responded to them graciously as a result of becoming saved?
Isnt this something worth considering ?
