Ecclesiastes 7:2 (KJV)
2It is better to go to the house of mourning, than to go to the house of feasting: for that is the end of all men; and the living will lay it to his heart.
Reflections:
When we think of mourning we think of extreme sadness accompanied by grief and sorrow. How are we to understand todays rather odd verse in light of this? Given the choice why would I choose mourning over feasting?
I believe the answer is because in mourning we come face to face with the reality that life is as a vapor which appears for a moment and then vanishes away. It brings us into a soul searching context where we come and look death in the face and realize that maybe were not invincible after all; that one day we too will die and stand before God.
God has placed eternity in every mans heart (Eccl 3:11 Amplified Bible) and in moments of mourning its desire is awakened. We come to want more of God working in our hearts, not less. The older one gets the dimmer the mirage of what earth has to offer becomes.
In the light of mourning, and the considering of death, the importance of serving Christ and storing up riches in heaven becomes alive. Mourning sharpens our spiritual awareness and brings us to finally understand that, yes, It is better to go to the house of mourning, than to go to the house of feasting.

Joe N. responded to yesterday's "Bible Portion for Today" regarding Stirring Up the Gift of God in Us:
Prayer stirs up the Spirit and only by the Spirit do we really get anything done in Christ. Intellect to intellect is just a game. Only the Holy Spirit draws people. The battle is the Lords not ours. Timothy was in flesh and the natural. Paul gave the analogy of a fire needing to be kindled. We all need more time in prayer. Even Bible people can be busy doing good without getting filled and renewed much like Martha. To strive in the flesh with Scripture to back us is a pathetic place to be when we are not filled with the Spirit.
