Matthew 16:20 (KJV)
20Then charged he his disciples that they should tell no man that he was Jesus the Christ.
Reflections:
Its surprising how many folks think that the Saviors first name is Jesus, and that his last name is Christ. This is not true. All the way through scripture the nation of Israel typically did not use last names. Gentiles (non-Jews) did use last names especially, in the New Testament. Israelites went by their first name and then a descriptor(s) was added.
In Matthew 16:17 we see that Simons name was Simon Barjona which meant Simon son of Jonas. With this in mind, Jesus name would be Jesus Barjoseph. Further descriptors were used also i.e., The carpenters son (Mt 13:55) or Jesus of Nazereth (Mt 26:1). The point being that Christ was/is not Jesus last name.
The name Jesus means Jehovah is salvation. In the Greek Jesus name was Iēsous. It was pronounced ē-ā-s's. In the Old Testament Jesus name was Joshua which again means salvation. The Hebrew for Joshua was Yĕhowshuwa` Pronunced yehhōsh'ah. There were other folks with the name Jesus in the New Testament: Jesus son of Eliezer (Lk 3:29) and Jesus surnamed Justus (Col 4:11).
I looked on line and found that the people who most commonly have Jesus for a first name, have the following last names: Garcia, Rodriguez, Martinez, Hernandez,Gonzalez, Lopez, Perez, Sanchez, Ramirez, Flores, Torres, Gutierrez, Gomez, Diaz,Mendoza, Rivera, Morales, Reyes, Alvarez and Chavez. You can see, there are, many, many Jesus.
Sooo, if we were going to go toe to toe with the devil, and we were to command him to flee in Jesus name! -- would an appropriate response from the devil be,Jesus who??? On the other hand if we were to speak the same command in the name of Jesus the Christ!, I dont think there would be too much confusion over whos authority we were talking about. Christ means the anointed one, The Messiah, The Son of God!
You might be thinking, Ron, arent you being a bit picky here? However, on the other hand, could this perhaps explain why the devil doesnt respond so well when we attempt to use the authority of Jesus against him?
