Numbers 2012 (KJV)

12 Then the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, Because you did not believe Me, to hallow Me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore you shall not bring this assembly into the land which I have given them.

Reflections:

It took God eighty years to prepare Moses to lead the children of Israel to the borders of the Promised Land. Then for another forty years Moses had to bear the burden of a contemptuous, rebellious and complaining people all because he was called by God to do so.

Just when all the Israelites, and Moses, were about to finally enter this wonderful, long awaited Promised Land; a land flowing with milk and honey, Moses, in a moment of utter frustration snapped.

It all happened when the Israelites murmured and contended with Moses and Aaron for lack of water saying, ï¿½If only we had died when our brethren died before the Lord! Why have you brought up the assembly of the Lord into this wilderness, that we and our animals should die here? And why have you made us come up out of Egypt, to bring us to this evil place? It is not a place of grain or figs or vines or pomegranates; nor is there any water to drink (Num 20:2-5).

So Moses and Aaron went from the presence of the assembly to the door of the tabernacle of meeting, and they fell on their faces. And the glory of the Lord appeared to them.

God spoke to Moses and said, ï¿½Take the rod; you and your brother Aaron gather the congregation together. Speak to the rock before their eyes, and it will yield its water; thus you shall bring water for them out of the rock, and give drink to the congregation and their animals.

It was then it happened, So Moses (the meekest man on earth [Num 12:3]) took the rod from before the Lord as He commanded him. And Moses and Aaron gathered the assembly together before the rock; and he said to them, Hear now, you rebels! Must we bring water for you out of this rock? Then Moses lifted his hand and struck the rock twice with his rod; and water came out abundantly, and the congregation and their animals drank.

Then the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, Because you did not believe Me, to hallow Me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore you shall not bring this assembly into the land which I have given them.

Moses had been instructed to simply speak to the Rock and God would once again show forth His miracle of provision in spite of their rebellion. Well, for Moses, the Israelites rebellion was the straw that broke the camels back. He angrily hit the rock with the rod twice, scolding the people and taking credit for the miracle. For this both Moses and Aaron would forfeit the Promised Land.

Whew, thank God for our New Covenant in Christ! But even so, we need to remember to always sanctify God, giving Him the thanks, praise and all the glory in all things. We mustnt steal from God to exalt ourselves, whether we feel justified in it or not. The Is and mes of pride are ever wanting to surface bringing us the glory and not our Savior.
