Proverbs 14:4 (KJV)
4Where no oxen are, the crib is clean: but much increase is by the strength of the ox.
Reflections:
Every time I quote this verse people look at me like Ive got two heads. What in the world are you talking about, they say?! Well, a crib is a stall where oxen are kept and fed when theyre not working its home. If you had a crib and no ox, you wouldnt have to do anything to keep it nice and clean. It would just stay that way.
But if, on the other hand you had an ox occupying the crib youve got a real daily clean-up job on your hands. An ox can weigh as much as 3000 lbs. I wouldnt want to be in the way when mister ox wants to relieve himself; and I definitely wouldnt want to be the one to clean up after him.
Oxen are used for plowing, for transport (pulling carts, hauling wagons and even riding), for threshing grain by trampling, and for powering machines that grind grain or supply irrigation among other purposes. In comparison to a human they are ten times stronger. A single ox can pull two regular sized cars on their own. They are amazing creatures. If you review our verse today does it make more sense now?
When someone is on fire for Jesus Christ, and truly empowered by the Holy Spirit, they are like an ox (bull) in the china shops of the world. They use brute spiritual force to get the job done! Nothing can stand in their way. Many times they can leave a mess behind them, like when Jesus turned over the money changers table in the Temple. They are typically more effective than any ten other Christians we know.
Their strength lies in the truth of Gods word preached boldly and uncompromisingly. To them sin is sin, and filth is filth and holiness is holiness, and theyre not afraid to say so. They can create quite a mess in this organized, anti-Christ world.
I guess the question for today is, is our crib clean because our lives are no way near the harvest fields of God, or is it a mess because we are?
