Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage you who attempt to be justified by law; you have fallen from grace You ran well. Who hindered you from obeying the truth? This persuasion does not come from Him who calls you.
Reflections:
The above words were written to the churches in Galatia, a district in Asia Minor. These fellowships were established by the apostle Paul on the basis of justification by faith (Rom 3:28) and not by works of the law. While Paul was away false teachers slipped in and began to bring the churches back under the Jewish law and into bondage all over again.
Paul writes this letter to the Galatian churches out of deep concern for their spiritual well-being. They had lost the liberty by which Christ had made them free through the gift of salvation solely by grace.
Remember when we got saved? We received salvation as a gift from a loving heavenly Father, through the body and blood sacrifice of his only begotten son? It was a free gift! Absolutely, positively free! The last words that Jesus spoke from the cross were it is finished (John 19:30)! And then he gave up his spirit and died. All that would ever be necessary to pay off the debt of sin for salvation had finally been paid; it truly was finished! Our only response was to be to receive it (John 1:12) as the free gift of grace that it was (Rom 8:2).
However it doesnt take long for the modern day Pharisees to try to squish us too into their own little bondage-boxes saying we must be (and do) whatever or we cant truly be saved. Were told we must take certain steps i.e., tithe, dress a certain way, or promise to live up to a certain set of rules or creed. They want us to believe our good standing with God and salvation depends upon our performance (MK 7:7; Col 2:8).
After a while, when we cant live up to it all, we personally began to feel bad, and then we began to feel guilty, and so we began to work harder and harder to try to appease (what we think is) an overly demanding God.
This is what happened to the Galatian fellowships. Beloved, if this fits your experience -- if youre under spiritual bondage to a person(s) in order to appease God, then quickly rip it off like a filthy garment, and put on your free robe of pure righteousness once again! Remember, if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed (John 8:36) !!!
