7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
Reflections:
The way to overcome great temptations is by the application of the written word of God coupled with the authority of Jesus Christ which all believers have been freely given by grace. It is ours to be used whenever the devil prowls around like a lion seeking whom he may devour (that would be you and me).
Somewhere along the road of Christianity many of us have lost the simplicity that we first had in Christ (2 Cor 11:3). We somehow graduated to a more sophisticated spiritual approach of fighting off the enemy; that being simply, in the name of Jesus (leaving out the it is written part).
For example: In the name of Jesus Christ devil I command you to do this or you do that! I just want to mention that when Jesus was personally tempted that he didnt directly respond with, in my Fathers name devil, you do this or that!
He responded rather from the very foundation of established truth. He used the written word of God coupled with total confidence (faith) in its established authority.
This may be sounding a little bit legalistic, but I really dont think that it is in this case. If Jesus is our role model (and He is), and if it worked for him we would do well do use the same pattern. We can appeal to the Holy Spirit and use any scripture He gives us against the specific onslaught of the devil and his minions.
Its so important to take the time to allow the Holy Spirit to quicken us from the same arsenal that Jesus drew from; the established, eternal written word of God. By using it along with the authority we have in our Lord Jesus Christ we can expect the very same result that Jesus had, which is, of course, that the devil had to flee (for a season).
Oh, you can be sure hell be back, but he will never be effective against Gods written arsenal empowered by the authority we have in Christ
