Genesis 13:9-10 (KJV)

Is not the whole land before thee? separate thyself, I pray thee, from me: if thou wilt take the left hand, then I will go to the right; or if thou depart to the right hand, then I will go to the left. 10 And Lot lifted up his eyes, and beheld all the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered every where, before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, even as the garden of the Lord, like the land of Egypt, as thou comest unto Zoar.

Reflections:

Our verse today involves Abram and his nephew Lot. It seems they had too many cattle grazing in a relatively small acreage and the herdsman were bickering over space.

Rather than allow it to cause strife Abram and Lot decided to split up. Abram gave Lot his choice of where he wanted to settle and Abram would take what was left. Lot chose the beautiful well watered valley and Abram the high country.

On the surface it appeared that Lot really made out the best. What he didnt know was that the land he had chosen, Sodom and Gomorrah, was a wicked land of blatant homosexuality and inconceivable moral wickedness.

We read in 2 Peter 2:7-8 that lot was was ï¿½oppressed by the filthy conduct of the wicked (for that righteous man, dwelling among them, tormented his righteous soul from day to day by seeing and hearing their lawless deeds).

Ah yes, the world has seemingly so much to offer, but the price tag is way higher than we as Christians can afford. It's difficult for a  righteous mans soul to bear up under its weight.

While its true that were living in the world we dont have to be like it. Yes, like Lot, it may well vex our souls to some degree, but God has set outposts in the midst of this wicked world; places where Christians can gather and fellowship together as the people of God.

Just because were forced to live in a pig-pen doesnt mean we have to live like a pig. Were a brand new creation of God in Jesus Christ; cities on a hill shining forth  beacons of hope. So lets let our light shine in the midst of the moral darkness so that all can see Jesus and one day we too, like Abram will move to the high country forever
