Ephesians 5:15-16 (KJV)
15See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, 16Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.
Reflections:
If we were to look up in the word redeem in the dictionary it would mean to buy back (with a media equal to, or greater than the basic value). For example Jesus bought us back from sin with His own perfect, sinless blood He redeemed us from the curse of sin and death.
The Greek takes this word redeem (exagorazo) to mean: to buy up, ransom; figuratively to rescue from loss, to improve opportunity.
As we apply this to redeeming the time it means that we are to place a very real value on time (to buy it up, improve its usage and make opportunity out of it)-- to invest it properly as good stewards of God. Time can be wasted, squandered and have a cheap price tag attached to it. But to God it is a precious commodity.
The other operative word: circumspectly (akribos) means to walk exactly, diligently, perfectly before Gods revealed will for us (all day long). And finally the exhortation that we are not to be fools, but wise I think we can all agree that we are surrendered by temptation and evil, all the time!
Sound like a tall order? It is if we try and do it in our own strength, but if we learn to rest in Jesus and to be fed and led by the Holy Spirit it comes quite naturally (spiritually speaking that is)
